Четвертый студийный альбом NIN (Halo 14) выпущенный собственным лейблом Трента Резнора Nothing Records 21 сентября 1999 года. The Fragile является концептуальным альбомом, чьей главной темой стал «распад вещей на части». Альбом продолжает сюжет The Downward Spiral , несмотря на полное изменение в звучании и стилистике альбома.
Альбом оказался не настолько прибыльным как The Downward Spiral и поэтому Резнору пришлось финансировать концертный тур самостоятельно.
Сингл The Day the World Went Away был выпущен 20 июля 1999-го и предварял выход альбома. Следующим синглом стал We're In This Together, релиз которого состоялся 27 сентября того же года. А 21 ноября 2000-го вышел альбом ремиксов Things Falling Apart.
Альбом поднимался до первой строчки Billboard 200, 10 позиции UK Albums Chart и до 2-го места Australian Albums Chart.
